Forgive Me, Lord - Part 8

When seeking forgiveness, in Psalms 51, King David asks for God to “obliterate” his sin, but then he does something truly worthy of our full attention. Desiring real change, he asks God to fix him. He knows the truth about the human heart and I t’s not good. Jeremiah describes it:

Jeremiah 17:9

“The heart is more deceitful than all else and is desperately sick; Who can understand it?”

David wants to change but he is unable to do that by himself so he cries out to God:

“Be gracious to me … wash me … cleanse me … teach me wisdom … purify me … blot out my sin … let me hear joy and gladness … create a clean heart in me … renew a right spirit in me … restore me … sustain me … deliver me.”

David has confessed his sin, cried out to God and begged him for mercy and compassion, but he is completely unable to do anything on that list. He is entirely dependent on God‘s grace.

This is why repentance is so tough. There’s nothing we can do to assure that it will mean anything at all. When we come before God humbled, confessing our sin and pleading for His mercy, we have only one option: put ourselves in God’s hands and trust Him.

I have good news for you. God has promised and He is faithful. Look at these verses that heart this out:

Jeremiah 29:12-13

“Then you will call upon Me and come and pray to Me, and I will listen to you. You will seek Me and find Me when you search for Me with all your heart.”

1 John 5:14-15

“This is the confidence which we have before Him, that, if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests which we have asked from Him.”

Romans 10:13

“For ‘everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.’”

And here is the one that tops them all off:

Malachi 3:6

“For I, the LORD, do not change; therefore you, O sons of Jacob, are not consumed.”

Do you get that? Don’t see what God is saying? He will hear you. He will save you. That will never change … ever!
