Forgive Me, Lord - Part 6

Psalms 51:5-6

“Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin my mother conceived me. Behold, You desire truth in the innermost being, and in the hidden part You will make me know wisdom.”

Along the way to forgiveness and restoration, David’s prayer makes an observation about one of the most fundamental truths of human nature. We are born with sin. That’s right, you and I inherited sin when we were born. It doesn’t seem very fair but it’s a reality. We aren’t sinners because we sin, we sin because we are sinners.

Verses 5 and 6 tell us the most basic element about the human heart. We desire sin. But, then, he immediately follows that by telling us about the heart of God. He desires Truth in the innermost being.

All of humanity is born into a sinful separation from God. We are all condemned and our journey in this life is our quest to become reconciled to our God. That’s what David is seeking in Psalms 51. It’s what we all seek. That’s the meaning of life that everyone always talks about.

What is the answer? In verse 6, David talks about the “hidden part” and how God will reveal His wisdom there. That Hebrew word, satham, refers to a building or a wall that has a crack deep below the surface. You can’t see it and you don’t even know it’s there, but it is foundational and it will eventually cause a collapse of that structure.

That crack is in David. It is where conviction of sin and transformation happen. That’s the human heart. David pleads for wisdom in his heart that will drive away this painful desire to disobey and seek his own will.

That should be the plea of every human soul. “Lord, heal that crack in me. Teach me your wisdom so that I can change. Put Christ in me and allow me to follow your Holy Spirit.”

Tomorrow: purity and cleansing are real and can happen.t
