Finding The Real Jesus - The Voice Of Many Waters
I’ve always wondered what the actual voice of God sounds like. In the Gospel of John, Jesus once said, “My sheep know My voice.” (Jn. 10:27)
The guy who wrote that, the Apostle John, actually heard the voice of Jesus every day for about 3 years. Then Jesus was gone, ascended into heaven. But something extraordinary happened to John. One day, Jesus spoke to him again. John was astounded at the voice of the glorified Jesus. It was like nothing he had ever heard before. All he could say was that it “sounded like the sound of many waters.”
One of the most beautiful sounds on earth is the sound of water. A gentle rain, a babbling brook, the rolling ocean’s waves when they meet the beach all bring us peace and calm.
But the calming, gentle rain can become the thundering and terrifying storm to those farther in its path. A babbling brook can become a roaring waterfall downstream and the rolling ocean waves can become giant walls of pounding water when the wind and the tide change.
I anticipate that moment when God first calls my name. I’ve always imagined that God’s voice will be like the gentle and peaceful rain.
That’s not what John heard. He heard a thundering, resounding voice that he and Ezekiel both described in the same way. It sounded like many waters. It was loud and unsettling.
“...and His voice was like the sound of many waters.” —Revelation 1:15
The voice of God is not like anything else. Isaiah 55 describes it as an incredible power. Hebrews 4 tells us that it is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword. When Elijah heard God’s voice, the mountains shook and rocks split into pieces.
It is a healing balm for the soul and a comfort to those who are weary. It can lift us up when we are down and it can bring life to dead bones and it is a terrifying, roaring sound that rattles and shakes those who hear it.
Hebrews 10:31
“It is a terrifying thing to fall into the hands of the living God.”
The voice of the Glorified Christ is unsettling because it is holy and pure and we are not. But, remember, God’s voice is for us and not against us. Those who know Jesus will rejoice to hear it because we know His Word and His voice will not be strange to us.
