Finding The Real Jesus - The Seven Stars

“In His right hand He held seven stars” —Revelation 1:16

In John’s vision of the Lord Jesus, he sees a being with graphically detailed physical features, each one telling us something important about Christ’s character and who He is. In verse 16, we learn that He is holding seven stars in His hands. These stars are related to the seven churches mentioned in chapters 2 and 3.

Revelation 1:20 tells us that the stars are the “angels” of the churches so, since each church has its own star, or angel, what does that mean? Does each church have some sort of a guardian angel?

The Greek word used here is “angellos.” An angellos is a messenger. While this word often refers to actual angels, it is uncertain if that is what John meant. He might be referring to the pastors of these churches. Regardless, let’s not miss the importance of what He is telling us: God has a message for His church.

The God whom we worship is - right now - standing in our midst and He has sent messages to us. So, here is the thing: How many of the churches around you are listening to God’s message?

If we are being completely honest, a lot of churches out there don’t care about God’s voice at all. They have become self-indulgent temples of their own voices. They are more concerned with what is popular and what the world wants than they are in hearing what God says.

The church that ignores God’s Word sits in a dangerous chair. When God speaks, His people do best when they listen. The pastor who talks over God’s voice so that his own voice can be heard is not a faithful messenger. In the next two chapters of Revelation, God tells us what happens to churches that ignore His Word and preach their own.

Revelation 2:16

“Therefore repent; or else I am coming to you quickly, and I will make war against them with the sword of My mouth.”

Reread that. How interesting! Did you notice that right after the stars are mentioned, the very next sentence is this:

Revelation 1:16

“…and out of His mouth came a sharp two-edged sword.”

Tomorrow we will look at that sword. What is it and what is it used for?
