Finding The Real Jesus - The Sash of Gold

Revelation 1:13

“I saw one like a Son of Man, clothed in a robe reaching to the feet, and girded across His chest with a golden sash.”

The writer of the book of Revelation, John, is describing what the risen Lord looks like as he relates a vision that he had of Him. John has already mentioned the long robe of Jesus, but he now notes that Jesus is also wearing a golden sash.

Sashes were worn by two types of people; soldiers and priests. In both cases, the sash was a sign of authority. The value of the material indicated how influential it’s wearer would be.

Sashes were placed on someone to give them authority. The book of Isaiah explains how God used a sash to dole out special honor upon a servant of the house of Hezekiah.

Isaiah 22:21-22

“And I will clothe him with your tunic and tie your sash securely about him. I will entrust him with your authority, and he will become a father to the inhabitants of Jerusalem and to the house of Judah. Then I will set the key of the house of David on his shoulder, when he opens no one will shut, when he shuts no one will open.”

The golden sash that Jesus is wearing is there to tell us that Jesus is our Lord and that He and the King are One. He stands as the Head of the Church, as Our Priest - our Mediator - in heaven.

He wears the golden sash of the King of Kings and He has the full authority of the Father. As the One who intercedes on our behalf, He has the final say regarding our eternal fate. What He opens cannot be shut and what He shuts cannot be opened. Those words are talking about you.

Have you ever heard someone say that you are being narrow-minded if you think that Jesus is the only way to heaven? Here is why we say that:

1 Timothy 2:5

“For there is one God, and one Mediator also between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.”

The One who wears the golden sash is the only One who can reconcile you to God. That person is Jesus, who stands in the midst of the churches, ready to intercede on your behalf. That sash is there to tell you that He is for you and your eternal fate is sealed and promised.

That is why we call the Bible Good News! Jesus has purchased your redemption and stands ready to plead your case for you. If I were you, I would let Him do just that.
