Finding The Real Jesus - Clothed In A Robe

“I saw one like a son of man, clothed in a robe reaching to the feet...” —Revelation 1:13

Whenever a robe is mentioned in the Bible, the writer is telling us something about the person who is wearing it. Kings and powerful authorities were known by their robes. Special robes were a symbol of honor and respect.

When the Prodigal Son returned home, his father placed his best robe on him. The robes of the priests were sacred and identified important roles in the temple. The redeemed of God will appear before God’s throne wearing white robes.

All of these robes signify something important about those who wear them. So, what does this long robe, that reaches to His feet, tell us about Jesus?

In the Gospels of Mark and Luke, Jesus mentions the long robes of the scribes. He lambasts them for wearing them. Their long robes were a sign of their importance. People greeted them respectfully in the synagogues and they were given seats of honor at cultural and political gatherings.

A long robe meant that you were a big deal, but they were all a farce. The scribe’s long robes were just hiding the superficial ugliness of corruption underneath them. While the people were praising them and fawning over them, they were robbing the poor and stealing homes from the widows. Their robes were fake and so were their prayers.

Jesus railed against them ruthlessly. His condemnation was harsh and filled with anger. Why? Because their long robes were stealing God’s honor. The long robe was for the Savior of the people. Jesus was that Savior and He stood right in front of them calling them out for their sin. They had cheapened the Messiah’s symbol of honor, using it for personal gain.

The long robe in Revelation 1:13 is a symbol to the people that they can trust the One who is wearing it. There is no corruption with Him and He is pure from His head to His feet.

He is worthy.
