Finding The Real Jesus - Feet of Burnished Bronze
Revelation 1:15
“His feet were like burnished bronze.”
As John describes the heavenly Jesus, he tells us about His feet. Feet are a symbol of authority for a king. When someone comes before royalty they are expected to kneel or bow. They are brought down to the feet of the king. It is the feet that one looks at when addressing a powerful king.
King’s feet are often mentioned in the Bible. Enemies are made into footstools for the King in Psalms 110, thanks is given by falling on one’s face at His feet in Luke, the washing of feet was an important sign of humility and kissing feet was an act of submission.
The feet of kings are surprisingly important so why, then, are the feet of the glorified Jesus made of bronze? Bronze is lovely but wouldn’t gold or silver be more fitting for the King?
It’s a fascinating thought that is being expressed here. Gold and silver are known for their great value. They are precious metals that are regarded for their purity. Bronze, on the other hand, has a quality that makes it a compelling picture of the nature of the church.
Bronze is an alloy. It does not exist in nature. The only way to make bronze is to take other ores and melt them together. Copper, tin and zinc are three separate metals, with various traits and qualities, all different in color. When they are put to the fire together, they are purified by the heat and blended together to create something stronger and more beautiful than the original.
That is the picture God wants us to have of our King’s feet. His feet are a picture of His church that has come from many nations, has gone through the testing fires and is purified and polished.
The feet of burnished bronze symbolize all of us coming together in unity, surrendering to the authority of Christ our Head. It’s the unique blending of all the unique qualities, traits and elements that make up many individual pieces and molds them into a church.
Next we will see how that process takes place.
