Day 55 – All That’s what David means by all. There is no day in your life when God suddenly ceases to be God.

Psalm 23:6 — “…all the days of my life.”
There are some words in Scripture that we hardly notice. “All” is one of them. We read it every day without giving it much thought. In the Bible, it can carry enormous weight.
The Bible repeatedly uses “all” to describe the completeness of what God is doing. He is the God who created all things. “All the earth” belongs to Him. Christ is before all, and in Him all things hold together (Col 1:16–17). Jesus tells His disciples that all authority has been given to Him, and then promises to be with them always (Mt 28:18–20).
God “causes all things to work together for good” for those who love Him. And nothing can separate us from His love—tribulation, distress, persecution, famine, nakedness, peril, or sword (Ro 8:28–39).
So when David says that goodness and lovingkindness will follow him all the days of his life, we shouldn’t hurry past that little word.
All means all.
David doesn’t say God’s goodness will follow him on the days when he is faithful. He doesn’t say it will follow him when life makes sense, when prayers are answered or when the pasture is green.
He says all.
That means the valley, the days when enemies pursue him, when he succeeds and when he fails. It includes days of confidence and of fear, days when he understands God and when he can’t see what God is doing.
None of those days fall outside the Shepherd’s care.
Here where it becomes deeply personal. Most of us feel that God’s presence is strongest when our faith is strongest. But Scripture turns that around. His goodness rests not in the strength of our grip on God, but in the faithfulness of the God who holds us.
David knew what it was to fail but that didn’t make God stop being his Shepherd. God could discipline him, and require repentance but His love didn’t leave.
That’s what David means by all. There is no day in your life when God suddenly ceases to be God. There’s no valley in which He loses sight of His sheep, no failure eludes Him and no tomorrow that takes Him by surprise.
He doesn’t promise that every day will be easy. He promises that His goodness and lovingkindness will be there for every day He gives us.
