Day 5: Shepherd

Psalm 23:1 — “The LORD is my Shepherd…”

This is one of the most beautiful descriptions of God in all of Scripture.

Shepherd.

The Hebrew word is ra’ah, meaning to tend, feed, guide, and care for a flock.

David knew shepherding firsthand. He knew long days and cold nights. He dealt with dangerous predators, treacherous terrain and wandering sheep. When David calls God a Shepherd, he is drawing from personal experience.

Sheep are not impressive animals. They are weak, easily frightened, prone to wander and completely unable to defend themselves. In many ways, we are exactly like them.

That is why the Bible repeatedly calls us sheep. God is telling the truth about our need. The good news is that sheep do not survive because they are strong. They survive because their shepherd is faithful.

Jesus declared:

“I am the Good Shepherd; the Good Shepherd lays down His life for the sheep.” (John 10:11)

Ancient shepherds risked their lives for sheep. Jesus actually lived that out for us.

A tourist once asked a shepherd in the Middle East how he controlled his flock. The shepherd smiled and said, “I don’t drive them. I lead them.” The sheep followed because they recognized his voice.

The Christian walk is not just about obeying rules. It is following our Shepherd. if you get a chance, read Ezekiel 34 today. It really explains a lot about that relationship.

You see, the question isn’t merely whether Jesus is your Savior. The question is whether you are following His voice. Take a moment and ask yourself: Whose voice are you following?

Every day we’re surrounded by competing voices—the culture, our fears, our ambitions, our emotions and our circumstances. Yet above them all is the voice of the Shepherd.

The title “Shepherd” tells us everything we need to know about ourselves and everything we need to know about God. We are sheep—dependent, vulnerable and prone to wander. He is the Shepherd—wise, patient, protective and faithful. The Christian life is not about proving how capable we are; it is about learning how completely we can trust Him. Today, listen for His voice, walk in His path and rest in His care.
