Day 40 – Before Me
Psalm 23:5 — “You prepare a table before me…”
Have you ever walked into someone’s home and realized they had been expecting you? You didn’t have to ask. There was a place already set, the meal was ready and everything reflected thoughtful preparation. Before you ever arrived, someone had been thinking about you.
That’s the picture David paints when he says, “You prepare a table before me.”
The Hebrew expression literally means “before my face” or “in my presence.” It emphasizes something that has become increasingly clear throughout Psalm 23: God’s care is deeply personal.
As we’ve slowly journeyed through these verses, one truth has quietly emerged. David is not talking about a distant God. He is speaking of a Shepherd who knows His sheep individually.
The LORD is my Shepherd.
God’s love is never impersonal. He knows each of His children by name, understands their weaknesses, remembers their sorrows and anticipates their needs long before they are able to express them.
Jesus carried this same truth into His own ministry. “I am the Good Shepherd,” He said, “and I know My own and My own know Me” (John 10:14). Later—on the night before His crucifixion—He comforted His disciples with these words: “I go to prepare a place for you” (John 14:2).
Notice the similarity. David says, “You prepare a table before me.” Jesus says, “I prepare a place for you.”
In both cases, the emphasis is not on the table or the place. It’s on the One who is preparing it. The Shepherd is never reacting to our needs at the last moment. He is already there, already working, already making ready what His wisdom knows we will need.
That realization brings tremendous peace. We are not following a Shepherd who is making decisions as He goes. We are following One whose wisdom is perfect, whose plans are complete and whose love is deeply personal.
David sees a God that has not merely prepared a table. He has prepared his table.

It’s easy to wonder whether God sees us in the middle of life’s routines and struggles. Psalm 23 answers that with quiet confidence.
