Day 39 – A Table
Psalm 23:5 — “You prepare a table before me…”
David’s no longer thinking like a shepherd. He’s thinking like a guest.
For 4 verses, God has been pictured as the Shepherd who leads His sheep through fields and valleys. Now, David is welcomed into a home where the Shepherd becomes a gracious Host.
But, let’s be real. David has just come through the dark valley and there is an enemy sitting and waiting for him. There are questions, right?
Why a table?
Why not a fortress or a sword?
Why not a place to hide?
A table says something those other images can’t. A table is about a relationship. Throughout the Bible, sharing a meal was an expression of fellowship, friendship, acceptance. To be invited meant you belonged and David finds himself seated at a table prepared by God.

Did you ever notice how much of the Bible is filled with meals? You could make the argument that the Passover meal was the whole point of the Old Testament and the Lord’s Supper is the center of the New Testament. Jesus repeatedly taught, encouraged and revealed Himself while sitting at a table. Even our future hope is described as the marriage supper of the Lamb.
The Gospel of John is an incredible illustration of that point. John is 21 chapters long. In John 13, Jesus sits down with his disciples for the Last Supper and they leave the table in John 18.
Almost 25% of John’s Gospel takes place at that table. From beginning to end, meals become reminders that God desires fellowship with us.
That’s why Jesus so often shared meals with people whom others avoided. Tax collectors, sinners, fishermen, Pharisees, grieving sisters, discouraged disciples—again and again, He met people around a table. Every meal quietly declared the same truth:
“You are welcome in My presence.”
Psalm 23 points us to that reality. The Shepherd rescues His sheep from danger and then invites them to a meal with Himself.
Think about the tables you have enjoyed sharing the most. It probably wasn’t just the food. It was because you knew you were with people who cared about you.
That is how God prepares His sheep for the spiritual battle.
