Psalm 23:4 — “…the shadow of death…”
There is a reason David chose death as the darkest image in this psalm. Death is the great enemy of humanity.
From the moment sin entered the world through Adam and Eve, death became our inevitable companion. Every funeral, every cemetery, every tear shed beside a hospital bed reminds us that we live in a world that has been broken by sin. Death was never God’s desire for us. It is an intruder, the consequence of our rebellion against the Creator.
We fear it because death seems final.
It separates loved ones.
It reminds us of our weakness.
It confronts us with questions.
It leaves us without answers.
Yet David doesn’t describe himself as standing before death. He is walking through its shadow.
The Good Shepherd did what no other shepherd could do. Jesus entered death willingly.
He didn’t avoid the cross; He embraced it. He walked into the deepest, darkest valley that mankind knows so that those who trust Him would never have to face it alone. When He rose from the grave, He broke death’s power forever! What was once the believer’s greatest enemy became a defeated foe.
The apostle Paul writes with confidence, “O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?” (1 Co. 15:55).
Notice that Paul didn’t deny the reality of death. He declared its defeat. For the Christian, death is no longer the end of the journey. It’s the doorway into the Shepherd’s presence.
That doesn’t mean we never grieve. But we grieve with hope because we know the grave is not the final chapter of the believer’s story. The Shepherd who walked out of His own tomb has promised to lead every one of His sheep safely home.
John 3:16
“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.”
Death remains a painful reality in this fallen world, but it no longer has the final word. Because the Good Shepherd laid down His life and took it up again, you can face tomorrow. Whatever valley lies ahead, remember this glorious truth: the Shepherd has already walked through death itself, and because He lives, those who follow Him will live also.
