Day 27 – The Shadow
Psalm 23:4 — “…the shadow of death…”
If you’ve ever walked through a valley, you’ve probably noticed how quickly the light disappears. Even in the middle of the day, cliffs and trees can cast long shadows across the trail. The sun is still shining, but you walk in darkness.
As a shepherd, David would have led his sheep through narrow ravines where sunlight was scarce and danger seemed to hide behind every rock. It’s no surprise that he described life’s darkest moments as “the shadow of death.”
The Hebrew word tsalmaveth describes deep darkness, thick gloom or the darkest of shadows. It describes those seasons when life feels overshadowed by fear, uncertainty or danger.
A shadow can make the landscape appear frightening and it can hide what lies ahead. But it has no power of its own. A shadow can’t hurt you.
A truck casts a large shadow across the road, but only the truck can do harm. The shadow just reminds us that something greater is nearby.
There are seasons when shadows seem to surround us. The shadow of a frightening diagnosis. The shadow of financial uncertainty. The shadow of broken relationships. The shadow of grief after saying goodbye to someone we love.
Those are real things but shadows don’t have the final word. A shadow can only exist where there is light.
That means every shadow in the believer’s life quietly reminds us that the Light is still shining, even when we can’t see it. Jesus told us, “I am the Light of the world; he who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life” (John 8:12).
Shadows never fully extinguish the Light. They may get really dark and obscure the trail but their very presence tells us the sun is still shining.
What a comforting thought. The shadows remind us that the Light has not gone out.
Isaiah 9:2
The people who walk in darkness will see a great light. Those who live in a dark land, the light will shine on them.
Are you living beneath a shadow that seems overwhelming? Don’t mistake the shadow for the final reality. The Shepherd is the Light of the World. The darkness may obscure the path, but it can never overcome the One who walks with you.
