Day 23 – Even Though
Biblical faith never asks us to pretend that it isn’t real. Instead, faith looks honestly at the valley while refusing to lose sight of the Shepherd.

Day 23 – Even Though
Psalm 23:4 — “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death…”
The first half of Psalm 23 is all about green pastures, quiet waters, restoration and righteous paths. Together, they paint a beautiful picture of a Shepherd caring for His sheep. Then, without warning, the scenery changes. The green hills turn into a dark valley.
David begins with two simple words: “Even though…”. Those words remind us of a truth that every believer learns over time. Following the Light does not exempt us from the darkness around us. David does not say, “If I walk through the valley.” He says, “Even though I walk…”
The valley is not just a possibility but an expectation.
Every believer experiences valleys. Some are marked by grief. Others by illness, disappointment, uncertainty, loneliness or seasons when God seems strangely silent. None of us would choose those paths, yet they are part of life in a fallen world.
David’s confidence in surviving it is remarkable. The Hebrew expression translated “even though” carries the idea of despite this or in spite of this reality. David is not denying the darkness around him. Biblical faith never asks us to pretend that it isn’t real. Instead, faith looks honestly at the valley while refusing to lose sight of the Shepherd.
That perspective is found throughout Scripture. Joseph trusted God despite betrayal. Job worshiped despite unimaginable loss. Habakkuk wrote this incredible declaration:
Habakkuk 3:17-18
“Though the fig tree should not blossom and there be no fruit on the vines, Though the yield of the olive should fail and the fields produce no food, Though the flock should be cut off from the fold and there be no cattle in the stalls, Yet I will exult in the LORD, I will rejoice in the God of my salvation.”
Their confidence was rooted in the unchanging character of God. It’s easy to trust the Shepherd beside quiet waters. It’s much harder to trust Him when the path disappears into the shadows. Yet it is often in those very moments that our faith grows deepest.
That’s the kind of confidence we can have. The valley is real but the Shepherd is greater.
