Day 22 – Sake
Psalm 23:3 — “…for His name’s sake.”
David has just told us that the Shepherd restores our soul and leads us in paths of righteousness. Have you ever asked why?
Why does God restore us?
Why does He guide us?
Why does He provide for us, protect us and remain faithful even when we are not?
He does it for His name’s sake.
When you read that, it almost sounds egotistical or vain. But the more we know about God’s character, the more beautiful this truth becomes.
God acts according to who He is. Everything He does is consistent with His holy, righteous, faithful, loving and unchanging nature. He can’t deny His own character or break His promises. Ge does things for His name’s sake because He can’t stop being who He is.
If God’s love depended upon our faithfulness, we would have no hope. If His guidance depended upon our wisdom, we would lose our way. If His forgiveness depended upon our works, none of us could stand before Him.
But our Shepherd’s faithfulness rests upon something far more secure. It rests upon Himself.
God acts for the honor of His name. Ezekiel told Israel that God would restore them, “not for your sake… but for My holy name” (Ezekiel 36:22).
They had failed Him repeatedly, yet God remained faithful because of His own character. Our salvation is secure because it rests upon the unwavering character of God rather than the unstable character of man.
Think about the Shepherd described in Psalm 23.
A faithful shepherd is known by the condition of his flock. His sheep become a reflection of his care.
So, when God restores the broken, forgives the sinner, strengthens the weak and faithfully leads His people, He is revealing the glory of His own name to the world.
Ultimately, everything in Psalm 23 points back to the Shepherd.
Green pastures are His provision.
Quiet waters are His peace.
Restored soul display His mercy.
Paths of righteousness lead to His holiness.
Every line tells us something about the Shepherd Himself.
Every work of art reflects the quality of the one who made it. God is committed to completing the work He has begun in us because we bear His name. Our weaknesses reveal the beauty of the Master to the world.
