Day 17: My Soul
God’s grace doesn’t just patch us up so we can keep going. He makes us new from the inside out.

Day 17 – My Soul
Psalm 23:3 — “He restores my soul.”
If yesterday’s focus was on what the Shepherd does, today’s focus is on what He restores: “My soul.”
The Hebrew word translated “soul” is nephesh, one of the most important words in the Bible. While we often think of the soul as the invisible part of a person, nephesh is much broader. It refers to the entire person—one’s life, mind, emotions, desires and very being.
Psalm 23 is saying that the Shepherd restores all that I am.
Life has a way of wearing us down. Our bodies become exhausted and our minds overwhelmed. Throw into the mix our wounded emotions and discouraged spirits and it can all add up to quite a mess.
But, the Shepherd knows every part of us because He created us. Nothing is hidden from Him. When Jesus invited the weary to come to Him, He didn’t promise easier circumstances. He promised, “You will find rest for your souls” (Matthew 11:29).
He restores the deepest part of who we are. The world treats symptoms. We look for relief in success, entertainment, possessions or distractions. They might dull the pain for a while, but they can’t heal what is broken within us. Only the Shepherd can reach the places no one else can see.
David knew this from experience. After his sin with Bathsheba, he cried out, “Create in me a clean heart, O God … Restore to me the joy of Your salvation” (Psalm 51:10,12). He didn’t ask for his circumstances to improve. He wanted his heart renewed.
God’s grace doesn’t just patch us up so we can keep going. He makes us new from the inside out.
When you fix a piece of furniture, you don’t just paint over it. You need to make it sturdy again. Likewise, God isn’t interested in covering over our brokenness. He restores us from the inside out, doing a work that reflects His perfect wisdom and grace.
3 John 1:2
“Beloved, I pray that in all respects you may prosper and be in good health, just as your soul prospers.”
Ask yourself honestly today: What part of your soul needs restoring? Is it your joy? Your peace? Your hope? Bring it to Him. The Shepherd who knows you also loves you.
