Day 10: Green

Psalm 23:2 — “…green pastures…”

The Hebrew word translated “green” (deshe’) refers to fresh, tender vegetation—the new growth that appears after life-giving rain. It’s a picture of vitality, renewal and abundance.

David’s not talking about dry, barren hillsides but lush meadows filled with nourishment. That image is striking because much of Israel’s landscape is very rocky and arid. Green pasture was precious because it was not guaranteed. It was a gift of God’s provision.

That is exactly the same with spiritual life.

There are seasons when our hearts feel dry, our prayers seem weak and our joy has faded. Yet the Shepherd knows where fresh pasture grows. He delights in leading weary souls to places where they can be renewed.

You can find those pastures in your church, on your knees in prayer or while sharing with a Christian friend.

His Word is one of those pastures. Jeremiah declared, “Your Words were found and I ate them, and Your Words became for me a joy…” (Jeremiah 15:16). God’s Word nourishes the soul just as grass nourishes the sheep.

His Word is like a garden that starts sprouting vegetation after the seed is planted in the ground. It’s like flowers, blossoming after the spring rain or a child growing. God‘s word gives life and vitality to His people.

Psalms 1:2-3

But his delight is in the law of the LORD, and in His law he meditates day and night. He will be like a tree firmly planted by streams of water which yields its fruit in its season and its leaf does not wither; and in whatever he does, he prospers.

Where have you been looking for nourishment lately? Entertainment may distract you, success may satisfy for a moment and possessions may impress others—but only the Shepherd can lead you to the green pastures that truly satisfy the soul.
