Bear One Another’s Burdens

In Galatians 6:2, we read the challenge to "Bear one another's burdens". What burden are we talking about?

A burden is a weight or a load. Have you ever needed to move a pile of dirt or some rocks? You might get a shovel and a wheel barrow and start loading it up. What happens when you put too much into the wheel barrow? It's going to tip over, isn't it? Or, it will get so heavy that you can't move it.

Wouldn't it be nice to have 50 more people with shovels and wheel barrows? That's the idea behind this verse. But, the Bible is not talking about moving dirt, is it? It's talking about the burdens of life that we all face at one time or another.

One of the most deceptive statistics about culture and the church is that divorce is just as common inside the church as it is outside. That statement used to bother me because it implies that the church makes no difference in our lives.

I thought about this for a long time and I studied it. I began to realize that I knew very few people who were active in a real, biblical church, who had gotten a divorce. However, I did know a lot of divorced people who started going to church when their marriage went bad.

Most people can't handle that kind of stress In their own. They need help and support. It’s during tough times like that when people turn to God. The church there to come around them to bear their burden with them through prayer, love and encouragement.

This is what we mean by bearing one another’s burdens. When you have a problem, there are people in your church to help you through it.

So, look at the church as your support group. In a true, biblical church you will find people all around you that care about you, pray for you and love you through all of life's problems!

God knows your problems and He has provided you with a source of help.

Now, let’s get real: are you using that resource? It’s right there for you.

Romans 15:1-2

“Now we who are strong ought to bear the weaknesses of those without strength and not just please ourselves. Each of us is to please his neighbor for his good, to his edification.”
