14 Reasons Jesus Went To The Cross - To Defeat Death
Hebrews 2:14-15
“Therefore … through death He rendered powerless him who had the power of death … and freed those who through fear of death were subject to slavery all their lives.”
In Genesis 1-3, mankind was given an extraordinary gift: life. All we had to do was walk with God and stay away from that tree. Well, that didn’t work too well, did it? Men and women have been dying ever since.
Death is the enemy of mankind. We were created to be with God forever and ever but God will not allow our rebellion to last. It always ends in death. But, something changed on that cross. Paul once wrote this: “Death is swallowed up in victory.”
1 Corinthians 15:55
“O Death, where is your victory? O Death, where is your sting?”
Jesus has defeated that mortal enemy. He has reconciled us to God and has rendered death incapable of touching His children ever again. When Jesus went to the cross, He taught us that physical death is not the end. He conquered that enemy and led “a host of captives free.”
The Reformers put it this way, “Those who are born twice, will die once. Those who are born once will die twice.” The book of Colossians tells us how that is even possible.
Colossians 1:13
“For He rescued us from the domain of darkness, and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son.”
How did the cross make that happen?
Colossians 2:13-14
When you were dead in your transgressions … He made you alive together with Him, having forgiven us all our transgressions, having canceled out the certificate of debt consisting of decrees against us, which was hostile to us; and He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross.”
Jesus went to the cross to defeat death on our behalf. That’s worthy of an amen, isn’t it?
