14 Reasons Jesus Went To The Cross - Access To God

I love this quote by JI Packer, “If you are to know God at all, you need to quickly realize that you cannot know Him. Rather, He, God, allows Himself to be known by you. Furthermore, you will learn that it was not you who sought God, but He who sought you.”

How amazing is that? Did you realize that your very own search for God did not begin with you. It began with God seeking you by tearing down the veil that hides Him from us.

Wait … what veil? What are we talking about?

You know. It’s the veil of the temple. Inside the inner part of the temple there was a place called the Holy of Holies. It was completely inaccessible by humans with the exception of the High Priest who, once a year, could enter into the holiest place on earth to seek reconciliation between God and man. This place, where God dwelt, was partitioned off from humankind by a giant curtain. That barrier was called the veil.

When Jesus died on the cross, one of the most powerful moments in the human history took place:

Matthew 27:50-51

“And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice, and yielded up His spirit. And behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom; and the earth shook and the rocks were split.”

At that moment in time, God offered peace for every human being on earth. He tore the veil which separated us. He turned His face to us and allowed Himself to be found. He took the first step in reconciling us to Himself. He was, in effect, saying, “I forgive you. Here is the pathway to reconciliation and you now have access to Me through My Son’s death on the cross.”

Now, read what Paul writes twice in his 1Corinthians to take all of this to the next level.

1 Corinthians 6:19

“Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you?”

That’s telling you something about your heart and the veil that hides God from you. God has torn it down and is saying, “Hey! I’m right here. Let’s fix this.”

That is reconciliation. That is peace. That is access to the One Who Loves.
