Your Light

Your Light (by Tim Klink of Prison Discipleship Ministry)
Matthew 5:16
Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.
When I read this verse I think of a lighthouse set on the edge of a cliff sending out it’s light to all who would see it. That light not only guides those who are on the waters but also those on the land who use it for a landmark. Everyone knows there is a problem when the light goes out. The only reason it goes out is because either the lighthouse keeper neglected it, or because something is obscuring its view.
It is the same when our light to the world goes out. How many times we neglect to simply turn it on. We go to the things of the world for our provision and answers instead of going to the source of the light, the Electricity so to speak, which is God and His Word.
2 Timothy 4:10
For Demas hath forsaken me, having loved this present world, and is departed…
Demas allowed his light to go out, and stopped guiding those who looked to it for direction.
The light from the lighthouse can be obscured by storms that come between it’s source and the one seeking it. The light is still there but not as bright as usual. God allows storms of suffering and grief to come into our lives so our faith in Him will grow and mature. The light is still there in the life of the believer, but how others see it can often be obscured by the words we say or the actions we choose.
In our ministry, I have worked with many who have allowed the storms to so obscure the light of Jesus Christ within them that they appear to have never had the light. They have believed the lies that the storm has overcome the light within them, and their actions and words show their belief. During this time their light guides no one, and those who look for it are also shipwrecked.
Storms will come into your life and mine, but they are there to strengthen our ability to keep our light burning, not to put it out. Others are always looking for our light, the Light of Jesus within us, and how we weather the storm is vital. Keep shining….
