You Are The Light Of The World
Your kindness may be the light someone needs today. Your forgiveness may show someone what grace looks like.

You Are the Light of the World
There’s something Jesus said that, if we really stop and think about it, is almost startling. We’ve spent these devotionals talking about Jesus saying, “I am the Light of the world.”
Then He turns to His followers and says this,
“You are the light of the world.”
—Matthew 5:14
How can that be? Jesus is the Light, and now He tells us we are too. The answer becomes clearer as He continues. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. You don’t light a lamp and put it under a basket—you put it where it can give light to everyone in the house. Then He says, “Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.”
Jesus isn’t telling us to manufacture our own light. He’s telling us to let His light be seen through our lives. A mirror doesn’t create light; it reflects it. And that’s what Jesus is asking His followers to do in a dark world—reflect Him.
When the world around us is angry, we can show kindness. When people are dishonest, we can tell the truth. When everyone is looking for someone to blame, we can offer grace. When people are afraid, we can hold on to hope. When others walk away from God, we can remain faithful.
Sometimes the most powerful testimony isn’t something we say at all. It’s the way we live. A light doesn’t have to argue with the darkness or convince it of anything. It just shines.
Think about a dark room. You don’t need a hundred lamps to make a difference. One small light can light up the room. If you’ve ever wondered what difference your life can possibly make in a world this dark, Jesus would tell you not to worry about how much darkness there is. Just let your light shine.
Your kindness may be the light someone needs today.
Your forgiveness may show someone what grace looks like.
Your faithfulness may remind someone that God is still trustworthy.
Your willingness to stand for truth may help someone who’s become lost in the shadows.
Someone who’s been groping in the darkness needs to see something in your life that makes them want to find that Light. That’s what Jesus is calling us to—not to become the source of the light, but to carry it.
The world doesn’t need us to pretend the darkness isn’t there. It needs people who have found the Light and are willing to let it shine.
