When Trees Fail to Produce
The Bible often uses trees as symbols of life, strength, and blessing. But Scripture also reminds us that trees can tell a very different story. Sometimes trees represent what happens when life is not rooted deeply enough.
In the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus approached a fig tree that was full of leaves but had no fruit. From a distance it looked healthy and productive but when He examined it closely, there was nothing there. It was all appearance and no substance.
Jesus often used this picture when teaching about spiritual life. A tree may have leaves, height and an impressive appearance—but the true test of a tree is always its fruit. He said:
Matthew 7:19
“Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.”
The lesson is simple and sobering: just as a tree can look alive while actually being unfruitful, it’s possible for our lives to look full on the outside—busy, active, and impressive—while something essential is missing. God is not looking for leaves; He is looking for fruit.
Healthy trees do more than look pretty. They grow. They produce. They provide nourishment and life to others. That is the kind of life God calls His people to live.
A fruitful life grows out of strong roots—time in God’s Word, prayer and a steady walk with Him. When those roots go deep, fruit will follow.
The good news is that fruitfulness is something God loves to produce in us. The more we stay connected to Him, the more life begins to show in our attitudes, words and actions.
So the question is not, “How impressive does my tree look?” The better question is: “Is there fruit on my branches?”
Because when our roots are deep and our lives are connected to God, fruitfulness and vitality will follow.
John 15:5
“I am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in Me and I in him, he bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing.”
