When God Showed Up For Joshua

Joshua 5:13–15

Joshua stands on the edge of battle. Jericho looms ahead—fortified, intimidating, impossible. This is his first major test as Israel’s leader. He is responsible now. The weight is heavy.

And then … God shows up.

A man stands before him with a drawn sword. Joshua doesn’t hesitate. He asks the most natural question:

“Are you for us, or for our enemies?”

In other words: Are you on my side? The answer stops him cold. “Neither.” I am the Commander of the army of the Lord.

God is not choosing teams. He is not aligning Himself with Joshua’s plans. He is saying: “Joshua… you don’t recruit Me. You surrender to Me.”

Joshua understands immediately. The shoes come off and he falls facedown in worship. Joshua realizes this is not a strategy meeting. It is a surrender moment.

The question is not whether God is on my side … but whether I am on His.

In John 14:13. Jesus said: “If you ask anything in My name, I will do it.”

Those words are often misunderstood. It’s not a formula — like a magic phrase or a blank check. To ask in His name means to ask in alignment with who He is. With His will, heart and purpose.

When we walk with Him, we begin to want what He wants. We think the way He thinks. We love what He loves. And that’s when prayer changes because we’re not asking God to bless our plans. We’re asking Him to accomplish His.

That’s exactly what Joshua learned. Once he got on God’s side, God went before him.

Walls fell.

Battles were won.

Victory followed.

Not because Joshua was powerful but because he submitted. That’s the truth most people miss: When we walk in step with Him, our desires begin to match His. Our hearts sync with heaven and suddenly, we see answers. Not because we’ve mastered prayer—but because we’ve surrendered our will.

We all stand where Joshua stood. Facing decisions, battles or uncertainty. And God asks us the same question: Will you get on My side?

Not: “Do you want Me to bless your plans?” But: “Will you walk in Mine?”

When God shows up, He reminds us He is Lord. And when we walk with Him, obey Him, align our hearts with His … He walks with us.

That’s when prayers change, doors open and walls fall.
