What Are You Saying, God?

I can't say that I’ve ever heard the audible voice of God but I do believe that God still speaks. Elijah knew that voice. He was a prophet and God often spoke to prophets with an actual voice.

In 1 Kings 19, after Elijah’s victory at Mt. Carmel, he ran in fear to Mt. Horeb. While there, God "passed by.”

I'm not sure exactly how that worked, but Elijah had to sort through a lot of things going on around him.

1 Kings 19:11-12

"He said, ‘Go forth and stand on the mountain before the Lord.’ And behold, the Lord was passing by! And a great and strong wind was rending the mountains and breaking in pieces the rocks before the Lord; but the Lord was not in the wind. And after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire; and after the fire a sound of a gentle blowing."

God spoke to Elijah but it was through the least likely of those incredible events. Of all the displays of God’s glory and power, God's voice was where Elijah would least expect it. It was in the “still, small voice.”

The thing is, Elijah knew how to hear God’s voice in the midst of the noise and commotion. That’s because he knew God.

In John 10, Jesus used the image of a shepherd's voice and all the other noises and distractions surrounding his sheep: false voices, thieves, robbers and wolves, but, said Jesus, "My sheep hear My voice.”

Sheep know their master’s voice when He speaks to them because they know their master. They are used to His voice.

He is talking about us. Are YOU able to hear and distinguish God’s voice above the noise and distractions of this world?

His Word is in my heart and mind. I am around godly people. I pray often and meaningfully. I am committed to growing in my faith. In short, I have made myself familiar with His Word.

God still speaks above the noise and banter of our lives. You can hear Him by keeping your nose in His Word, stopping often to pray, going to a good Bible-teaching church and dedicating yourself to becoming familiar with His voice.

We will all stand before Him some day. Will you know His voice when you hear it?
