What Am I Thankful For Today?

I have a friend who seems to have the ability to thank God for everything. It doesn't matter what it is or how it affects him, he is always ready to give God thanks for good things and bad. I love that.

I have a much more "earthy" disposition. I can find myself going through a whole day without doing that. I can find myself in prayer at the end of a busy day, suddenly realizing that I took everything for granted all day long.

That's not right. Philippians 4:6 tells us to give thanks to God in everything. That means ALL the time and that means for EVERY thing. What do I have that is not given to me by God? Nothing at all. Everything that I own and all that I have was given to me by Him. I can’t lay claim to anything that I have.

In the Old Testament, the Israelites were preparing to build a temple to God. As they prepared themselves for the task before them, King David prayed a prayer that included this amazing insight:

1 Chronicles 29:12-14

“Both riches and honor come from You, and You rule over all, and in Your hand is power and might; and it lies in Your hand to make great and to strengthen everyone. Now therefore, our God, we thank You, and praise Your glorious name. But who am I and who are my people that we should be able to offer as generously as this? For all things come from You, and from Your hand we have given You.”

This should be my attitude through the whole day. Each one of us should start every morning and end every day with the thought that God has given so much to me that I should never, ever forget to give Him thanks.

Is that how you start and end each day? I know that there are people out there who do that every day.

Thank you, Lord!
