The Parables of Jesus: The Talents - Part 2

Before we dig too far into the Parable Of The Talents, it’s important to understand that Jesus is telling us something about us and God. The relationship between us is described as that of a servant to a Master. We are the servants, in case you are keeping track.

This theme is repeated throughout the entire Bible. All of us are created beings who owe everything to our Maker. Everything we have has been given us by Him. Our relationship with Him can be defined in one word: worship.

To every man, woman and child on earth, the idea of worship is based on the reality that there is one throne in Heaven and it is already occupied. Our purpose and meaning in life is found in serving the Master that sits on that throne. No thing, no person, no idea or desire can ever give us meaning or purpose in life. Those things come to us in Him alone and in nothing else.

When we understand that, we can look at this parable to see what Jesus is teaching us. It boils down to this: God has given us great treasures to use in serving Him here on earth. The question, then, is, “What have you done with the treasure that God has given you?”

In the Book of Acts, Jesus departs from this earth and ascends into Heaven. In John 14:3, He made it clear that He was coming back some day. He told us about that because He was leaving His church in our hands. His ministry was to become our ministry and just like the master in the parable, He wants us to multiply His treasure.

That means He wants us to:

  • Spread the Gospel, make disciples, baptize and teach (Mt 28:19-20).

  • Love others (Jn 13:34-35) and care for them (Jn 21:17).

  • Be salt and light to the world (Mt 5:13-14).

  • Help the poor and the sick, be hospitable to the needy (Lk 14:13) and feed the hungry and thirsty (Mt 25:35-36).

You see, Jesus has made us participants in His Kingdom, not observers or bystanders. The third servant in the Parable Of The Talents did nothing with what his master gave him. He squandered his treasure.

Tomorrow - what that means to you and me.
