The Parables Of Jesus - The Wineskins: Part 3
Jesus was looking for disciples and he had a unique criteria: brokenness and humility. In order to serve God greatly, you must be broken deeply. That’s what Jesus was looking for. Simon Peter characterized what made the disciples of Jesus stand out from all the others. Peter came to Jesus on his knees. When he saw who Jesus was, he instantly understood his own complete unworthiness before Him.
Luke 5:8
“But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, ‘Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord.’”
Peter was the first to really grasp it. We can’t see God for who He really is until we understand who we really are. Those untrained fishermen and tax collectors were moldable and eager to learn.
Why was that important? It’s because of the very nature of the Gospel itself. The prevailing religious system was not suited for the Gospel. It was, in fact, the very antithesis of it. Jesus wanted disciples who had lived lives that resembled the people He was coming to save.
When He talked about pouring new wine into new wineskins, He was talking about God’s great love, grace and mercy. The Pharisees, Sadducees and Scribes didn’t know about those things. They understood God as an angry, unforgiving Judge, demanding complete and utter dedication to a complex system of laws, rituals and traditions.
Tomorrow: the mission of the new wine.
