El Emet - The God of Truth

It is clear that truth is important to God. Just read the Bible. Almost every page cries out that God is all about truth. The name “El Emet” means that God is The God of Truth.

Zechariah 8:8

“...and they shall be My people, and I will be their God in truth and righteousness.”

An interesting thing happens in the New Testament. In the first 68 chapters of the first three Gospels, truth is barely mentioned at all. Matthew, Mark and Luke just take it for granted that God is true. But then comes the Gospel of John.

John has a different plan. He is not interested in just telling the story of what Jesus did. He wants us to understand who He really is. To John, Truth is everything. He mentions truth 42 times in 21 chapters! He tells us that grace and truth are realized in Christ (1:16).

The followers of God practice truth (3:22) and they worship in truth (4:23). In chapter 8 they stand in the truth and the truth makes them free. In chapter 17 the truth sanctifies. But it all comes home in this verse:

John 14:6

“I am The Way, and The Truth, and The Life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.”

To John, Jesus is not just true, He IS Truth. Notice the difference. Truth isn’t something He does, it is something that He is. That is a startling statement. We expect Jesus to say true things and to be truthful but that’s not what He is saying. He claims to actually be Truth.

This tells us something special about God. He is not true because He does true things but, rather, things are true because He does them. He is the actual source of truth.

Do you see the implications for you in your daily living? Because God is Truth, He can be trusted. He is worthy of your love and praise. This is what makes all the difference.

John 18:37

“For this I have been born, and for this I have come into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice.”
