Adonai

There are three primary names for God in the Old Testament. Elohim is the first name to appear and it tells us about God’s strength and power. The next name for God is Adonai. It is the Hebrew word for Lord and it is not really a name as much as it is a title. Lord is the position that we give to God over our lives.

A Lord is someone with authority. When we call our God “Lord”, we are saying that He has complete authority over us. All that we have is because He has given it to us and everything that we are is what He has allowed us to become.

Why do we do this? Why do we live a life of submission to God when the rest of the world ignores Him and thinks that we are foolish? It is because of where we were and what He has done for us.

Ephesians 2:1-6

“And you were dead in your trespasses and sins, in which you formerly walked according to the course of this world ... But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in our sins, made us alive together with Christ.”

The Christian puts God first in everything because He saved us from death and purchased our lives. When we pray, we kneel in submission to Him. When we worship, we raise our hands in praise to Him. When we read His Word, we respond in obedience to Him. In all that we do, we do it with His glory in mind.

This is what we mean when we call Him Lord. He is in charge and I live my life for Him because He gave His Son for me.

2 Corinthians 4:5

“For we do not preach ourselves but Christ Jesus as Lord.”
