The Love Of God - Part 8

Here’s the problem as the Apostle Paul sees it: There is a God, He is moral and good, He wants us to follow Him and He has given us laws as guidelines on how to do that. Why is that a problem? Because the law is too burdensome and we are depraved human beings who love independence and self more than obedience to God.

How in the world can we follow God’s laws? Romans 3:23 tells us that every human being that ever lived has fallen short in that endeavor.

All, that is, except for one. Jesus was the only person who never sinned. Wouldn’t you love to be able to sit down with Jesus and ask Him how to do that?

One day, a young man saw Jesus and ran up to Him, recognizing the opportunity to gain His insight. He asked Jesus a simple question. Matthew 10 relates that he asked Jesus which of those many, many laws was the most important.

The reply of Jesus reveals His advice in obeying the law perfectly. Jesus told him that love is the key. If you love God with all of your heart, soul and mind, and if you love your neighbor as much as you love yourself, all the others laws will follow. (Matthew 22:37-40)

Love, according to Jesus, is the foundation of every law of God. All of the other laws descend from these two principles of love. Love God with everything you have. Live your life for the benefit of others. Put God first and others next and you will find yourself as a humble servant of both. That, my friend, is God’s will for your life: loving humbly and fully.

Galatians 5:13-14

“…through love serve one another. For the whole Law is fulfilled in one word, in the statement, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”
