The Love Of God - Part 6
Every so often, I have a heart-breaking talk with someone who is struggling to live out their faith. When I say that, I mean that they have failed to follow Christ in a worthy manner. They aren’t living the way a Christian should. The conversation will eventually lead them to conclude that God no longer loves them.
What do you say to someone who is in that place? Clearly, the Bible teaches that God hates sin and this person is loaded with it. What message does the Bible have for them?
I’m glad you asked. Here’s what the Bible teaches: God’s love for you can never end. Jeremiah 31 says this:
Jeremiah 31:3
“I have loved you with an everlasting love; Therefore I have drawn you with lovingkindness.”
See that word “everlasting”? It means that God is eternal so His love is too. He has no beginning and no end. In addition to that, God never changes. Malachi tells us why that is so important.
Malachi 3:6
“For I, the LORD, do not change; therefore you, O sons of Jacob, are not consumed.”
God’s people are not consumed because God has promised to always love those who are His and He will never change His mind about that. God knew all of your sin before He died on the cross for you. He knows your failures and your weaknesses. That was all taken into consideration.
Now, here’s what that does NOT mean. It does not mean that God has stopped hating sin. He will judge all sin one day.
The point is this. The fact that you sin does not cause God to stop loving you but it DOES mean that you should ask yourself if you truly love God. Knowing God’s love should lead you to hate your sin just like God does. RC Sproul once said this: “We need to face the fact that we commit the sin because we want to do that sin more than we want to obey Christ at that moment.”
Your sin is the measuring stick of your love for God, not His love for you.
