The Love Of God - Part 3
I Corinthians 13:1-13
There are few people who would argue against the idea that the Bible is the greatest book ever written. Whether you love God or not, you cannot overlook the impact the Bible has had on world history, culture and literature.
So let’s take a concrete example of that statement: the greatest words ever written about love occur in a single chapter of the Bible. That chapter is I Corinthians 13.
Need convincing? Just read it. Go ahead. It will take you less than 2 minutes. You will fall in love with the structure of the chapter, the beautiful prose and the incredible picture it portrays of what love is all about. Here is a sample:
1 Corinthians 13:4-7
“Love is patient, love is kind and is not jealous; love does not brag and is not arrogant, does not act unbecomingly; it does not seek its own, is not provoked, does not take into account a wrong suffered, does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth; bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.”
There is no greater description of love than these 13 amazing verses of scripture. No author has ever captured what love is like the Apostle Paul did in about 55 AD. He was writing a very personal letter to a church full of former Greek pagans who really struggled to understand teal love. They were confused about their marriages, relationships and life. They often had straight-up chaos in their church services. They needed to figure out love before they could grow in their faith.
So, God sent them a letter in which the Creator described His idea of what love should be like. Those Words leap off the pages of Paul’s letter and right into our hearts.
Songs have been written this passage, books written, sermons preached, hearts changed and weddings have been sealed by its words.
It is the chapter of love. Read it. You will not be disappointed.
