The Lord’s Prayer - “Thy Will Be Done"
The third petition in the Lord’s Prayer has to do with surrendering our own will to the will of God. When Jesus taught these words of prayer to His disciples, I'm sure they had no idea of the significance of what Jesus was saying.
To Jesus, "Thy will be done" was a declaration of total commitment. There was no wavering, no hesitation, no selfish ambition. Those four words are the same words He would pray in the Garden of Gethsemane when He was betrayed, arrested, put on trial and sentenced to death.
Matthew 26:42
“My Father, if this cannot pass away unless I drink it, Your will be done.”
Jesus knew what was waiting for Him, but He was totally committed to God's will. It was for this that He came. This was what He was meant to do. In the face of torture and death, He was committed to putting God's will before His own.
This, then, is how you and I should pray: "Not my will, God, but yours.” When we pray that prayer, we become totally committed to seeing that happen, no matter what may come our way. “Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done"
Jesus knelt in prayer, God's will was done and He was crucified the very next day. Jesus taught complete commitment and He lived His life in total submission to it. He knew that God upholds those who put His glory above their own. And because of Christ's complete and unwavering dedication to God’s will, you and I have the prize of eternal life!
Are you committed to putting God's will first? Is His glory more important than your own? He will honor you for it and His will will be done.
1 John 2:17
“The world is passing away, and also its lusts; but the one who does the will of God lives forever.”
