The Lord is Near (by Tim Klink of Prison Discipleship Ministry)

Psalm 145:18

The LORD is nigh unto all them that call upon Him, to all that call upon Him in truth.

It is always difficult when my wife needs to go to the hospital, and stays for several days to allow the doctors and nurses to diagnose and treat what may be wrong. Over the years I have come to realize that when she is in need of physical healing, the best place for her is that hospital bed. I certainly do not like to see her enduring difficult times, and the time apart from her is often hard, but that is the very best place for her in her time of need.

I have sat by her in the hospital room on many occasions when a nurse will come into the room and tell us that something needs adjusting. She will look at all of the gadgets, turn a few knobs, move this or that, and then leave, having accomplished her mission. Sometimes she will explain what she is looking for, but most of the time she just quietly goes about her work and fixes what needs fixed.

How did she know there was a problem when we were sitting right there and had no idea there was anything wrong? If you’ve ever had a hospital stay, you know that there are a countless number of wires, gadgets, and instruments attached to various parts of your body. These are truly not intended to make you more uncomfortable, as often is the case, but to monitor everything that is vital to your situation. Those attending you are watching what is going on at the other end of all those wires, and even before you realize there is a problem, they can correct it. While I often joke about medical “practice,” the technology today is amazing.

However, there is One who knows the most deep seated things in our life that are not quite right, and He doesn’t need wires or gadgets to diagnose and treat the problem. He is not in some room unattached from us, but is dwelling in our innermost being, seeing everything that goes on in our thoughts, in our hearts, and in our motives.

The Lord is “nigh” and He will bring comfort and spiritual healing when we call upon Him. Don’t forget to call….
