The Light Of The World
And Jesus came among them and said, “I am the Light of the world.”
I Am the Light of the World
There are times when the Bible talks about light as something God gives us. For instance:
Psalm 119:105
“Your Word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”
In a very real way, His presence brings light which illuminates the darkness. But Jesus doesn’t stop at saying that He can give us light. He IS the Light.
John 8:12
“I Am the Light Of The World; he who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life.”
I don’t think we should rush past those words. Jesus didn’t say, “I know where the light is” or “I can show you how to find the light.” He said, “I am the Light.”
That is telling us that the way to combat spiritual darkness isn’t a philosophy, a program, a political movement or more knowledge. The answer is a Person.
Jesus came into a world that was dark. People were confused, hurt and broken. Sin had separated us from our God. Some were looking for the light but others had become comfortable with their shadows. They loved the darkness.
And Jesus came among them and said, “I am the Light of the world.”
But He didn’t stop there. He said, “he who follows Me.”
Let’s just sit here for a minute and take that in. Jesus is calling us to follow the Light. Sometimes that means that we don’t know everything that lies ahead. We may not understand the road or know what is over that next hillside.
But we know who is leading us.
That’s what faith is. It’s not about having enough light to see the entire journey. It’s having enough light to take the next step with Jesus.
The world may be dark. There may be times when we don’t understand what is happening around us. But Jesus has not asked us to find our way through the darkness by ourselves.
He has said, “Follow Me.”
When you can’t see the way ahead, you don’t need to know the whole road. You just need to keep following the Light.
