The message of the Gospel isn’t primarily about humanity finding its way to God. It’s about God coming to us.
The Light Is Coming
We need Light.
The world is dark and that darkness can really be overwhelming at times. As Christians, we love the Light but the darkness around can seem to have some power even over us. But God sees.
He came into the darkness Himself.
Isaiah once proclaimed:
“The people who walk in darkness will see a great Light.”
The people who were groping along the wall would one day be able to see. The people who were lost would find their way. The people who had been living among shadows would finally encounter reality.
The Light was coming. And when that Light came, it had a name.
Jesus.
Isaiah said a Light would shine and then Matthew announced that the Light had dawned.
God’s plan wasn’t to just give people some instructions for finding their way through the darkness. He came to them.
John would later write:
“There was the true Light which, coming into the world, enlightens every man.”
— John 1:9
Jesus entered our dark world. He came into a world filled with sin, confusion, deception, suffering and death. He came to people who were searching for answers but couldn’t find their way. And He didn’t simply say, “Here are some directions.”
He said, “Here I am.”
The message of the Gospel isn’t primarily about humanity finding its way to God. It’s about God coming to us. The Light came into the room and that Light was Jesus Christ.
This is why we don’t have to despair when we look at the darkness around us. The darkness is real, but it isn’t new. And more importantly, God has already answered the darkness with His Son.
The world may still be dark. People may still be confused. They may still mistake darkness for light.
But the Light has dawned.
And once you have seen the Light, you don’t have to keep groping in the darkness. You have a source of Light.
You have Jesus.
“Because of the tender mercy of our God with which the Sunrise from on high will visit us to shine upon those who sit in darkness and the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.”
