Steps Of Faith — The Priests In The River (Part 1)

Get Your Feet Wet

Have you ever been in a place where you knew what needed to be done, but there was an obstacle that made it seem impossible?

That’s where Israel found itself in Joshua 3. After 40 years, they were finally ready to enter the Promised Land. But there was a problem. The Jordan River was overflowing its banks and they needed to get to the other side. Their leaders had to make a way but God had a plan.

God told the priests to carry the Ark of the Covenant ahead of the people and when their feet touched the water, God would stop the river from flowing.

Joshua 3:15–16 tells us that as soon as the priests stepped into the Jordan, the waters stopped and stood in a heap, allowing the people to cross on dry ground.

Think about the position those priests were in. They were carrying the most sacred item to them, leading the way for an entire nation and they walked directly into a river that was at flood stage. They couldn’t stand on the shore and lead the people across. They had to go into the water.

It is our nature to want God to remove the obstacles before we take a step. We want the river to stop flowing, the road to become clear and a neon, blinking sign telling us when to move and when to stop. But there are times when God calls us to serve right in the middle of the overflowing river.

You aren’t always able to change the circumstances. There will be days when God asks you to be faithful right where He has put you. That means your feet are going to get wet.

Notice an important point here: the priests didn’t stop the river. Oh, the river stopped. That’s not the point. The point is that God did that. Their job was to carry the Ark and follow His instructions. The miracle belonged to God, not to the men carrying it.

That’s a big deal. Faith doesn’t mean we have to make everything happen. Faith means we are willing to serve God faithfully and leave the outcome in His hands.

The first step of faith is just being willing to get your feet wet.

Is God calling you to step into the water rather than standing safely on the shore? Just take the first step into the water and let Him show you what He can do.
