Steps Of Faith — Step Through the Open Door

Paul kept walking even when God closed a door. He didn’t give up. He just kept moving until God directed him to the door that was open.

But there’s more to it than that. When taking steps of faith, we also have to be willing to walk through the doors that are open.

Acts 16 tells us that Paul traveled to Philippi, where he stayed for several days. On the Sabbath, he went outside the city gate to the riverside, where he and his companions expected to find a place of prayer. There they met a group of women, including Lydia.

Lydia listened to them speaking about Jesus and “the Lord opened her heart to respond to the things spoken by Paul”. She and her household were baptized.

Think about how this happened. Paul didn’t arrive in Philippi with a large crowd waiting to hear him preach. He just went where he could find people and started a conversation. He took the opportunity God placed in front of him, and watched God work.

In effect, he Just Walked Across the Room.

We might think sharing our faith requires a perfect setting, the right words or a special opportunity. But sometimes it begins with something as ordinary as sitting down beside someone, asking a question or taking an interest in their life.

We can’t open someone’s heart to the Gospel. That’s up to God. Our job is to show up, start the conversation and be the face of Jesus to whomever God has put before us.

You may never know what God has been doing in someone’s life before you meet them. They might be going through almost anything. But you might be the person God uses to help them take their next step toward Him.

Paul didn’t know Lydia was waiting at that riverside when God walked him through the door that opened before him.

So look around you today. Who has God placed in your path? What conversation have you been avoiding? What opportunity have you been waiting for someone else to take?

You don’t have to know what will happen next. You just have to take that first step.

Just walk across the room.
