Steps Of Faith — Walking With Abraham
Remembering to Worship
We spend a lot of time planning the steps we need to take to get somewhere. We make plans and keep moving. But one of the most important steps of our journey comes when we take time to stop.
That’s something we learn from Abraham. After leaving his home, he traveled through Canaan. When he arrived near Shechem, God appeared to him and reaffirmed His promise to him. Abraham responded by building an altar to the Lord.
He continued his journey toward the hill country where he pitched his tent, built another altar, and called upon the name of the Lord.
I find that fascinating. Abraham was on a journey, but he didn’t allow the journey to become so important that he forgot the One who had called him.
He stopped to worship.
Later, after a difficult failure in his walk with God, Abraham returned to that very same place, “to the place of the altar which he had made there formerly; and there Abram called on the name of the LORD” (Genesis 13:3–4).
There’s something encouraging about that. Abraham made a poor decision in Egypt. Fear had gotten the better of him. But he went to a familiar place of worship and called upon the Lord again.
His relationship with God remained central.
How often do we get so caught up in the business of living that we forget to stop and spend time with God? We have places to go, things to do, obligations to fulfill and problems to solve. Even the good things can displace the most important thing.
Our relationship with God can’t be something we squeeze into the leftover spaces of our lives. Worship, prayer and time in His Word need to be part of the journey itself.
Abraham’s altars remind us that wherever God leads us, we should never forget Him along the way. And when we stumble—as Abraham did—we can return to Him. Our failures don’t have to end our journey.
Don’t become so busy taking steps toward where you want to go that you forget to stop and worship the One who is leading you.
