Steps Of Faith: My Journey
Part 1
When I first became a Christian, I remember having some friends express their concerns about my intelligence. I was “committing intellectual suicide” and “not thinking things through.”
That was 51 years ago. Since that time, my pursuit of God has easily been the most academically stimulating part of my life. As a Christian, I am led to understand God in ways that the unbeliever never sees.
Faith leads us down the paths of the sciences. Defending our faith requires us to learn elements of physics, biology, psychology, math, logic, archaeology, history, literature, zoology, geology, geography and astronomy.
Learning about Jesus takes us through the corridors of philosophy, learning from great names like Plato, Epimenides, Aristotle, Solomon, Paul, Socrates, Kierkegaard, Nietzsche, Hammurabi and countless others.
Christians have rigorously studied ancient cultures, examining the nuances and subtleties of the alphabets, grammars and vocabularies of their languages, enriching our own understanding of language and communication.
We have studied history and learned about the nature of mankind and the genius—and foolishness—of our past.
We have been steeped in the social sciences and have observed human nature and interaction, studying the behavior of people, both good and bad.
We have tested the greatest book ever written, with a depth and intensity that most people can never imagine. Verse-by-verse, day-by-day for centuries.
What have I learned in my own personal search for truth? My 60+ years of study has only deepened my faith and my intellect. I have learned that God is there, that He cares for us and that He will make Himself known to those who seek Him.
I have learned that Christianity is not some weak-kneed, easy escape from science. It bears scrutiny and holds up to the challenges of the deepest skeptics. I have learned that it is real and it is true. In the words of CS Lewis:
“I believe in Christianity as I believe that the sun has risen: not only because I see it, but because by it I see everything else."
