Steps Of Faith — Just Walk Across The Room
In this series, we’re learning how faith grows by looking at those moments in the Bible when people had to literally take a step of faith. Sometimes, that’s all it takes. We have to start walking and let God take care of the rest.
Last week, I attended a chaplains conference in North Carolina. Mike Stout, of Corporate Chaplains of America, was leading a session when he mentioned a book by Bill Hybels. It was the title that caught my attention: Just Walk Across The Room.
I thought, what a great way to describe what this series is all about!
How many times have I sat and watched people come and go without making any effort to engage them or find out what’s happening in their lives?
Can I tell you something? No journey starts until somebody takes the first step. No conversation begins until somebody speaks the first word. Somebody has to start.
That’s the idea behind that book title. The Christian life is described as walking with Jesus. And sometimes, following Him means getting up and going somewhere, even when we don’t know exactly what will happen next.
Just walk across the room.
Yesterday, in my sermon, I said that God can’t steer a parked car. Sometimes we want God to show us everything before we move. But He may be waiting for us to take the next step.
You know how you can fix that?
Just walk across the room.
You know what you’ll find there? People! And people are exactly where God can use us to make a difference.
This week, we’re going to follow Paul and Silas as they travel to spread the gospel. They had a destination in mind, but they didn’t know all the turns their journey would take. The Holy Spirit would redirect them, close some doors, and open others.
It all began with a willingness to go.
They took one step, then another, and God used their obedience to carry the gospel into Europe.
Sometimes, the next great thing God does begins when we simply get up and go.
