Steps Of Faith — Intro (Part 1)

We are all on a journey of faith to some degree or another. Some of us are still stumbling our way along, while others seem to be making great strides. But wherever we are in our walk with God, we’re all learning what a journey of faith looks like.

At some point, we have to take a step.

It’s interesting that the Bible describes our life with God as a walk. Our walk is the way we live our lives with and for Jesus. It’s not symbolic language. It’s a literal description of what it means to follow Jesus.

When the disciples followed Him, there were no cars, buses or trains to take them from one town to another. When Jesus went somewhere, He walked—and His disciples walked with Him. A follower of Jesus:

Goes where He goes.

Says what he says.

Does what He Does.

That’s what walking in faith means. It requires something from us. We have to actually step away from where we are standing.

Sometimes the next step is easy to see. At other times we have no idea where it’s going to lead. One moment we’re standing safely at home and then, God asks us to step into something we’ve never experienced before.

That’s what this series is about.

We’ll look at those moments in Scripture when men and women of faith actually take a step.

Think of Peter when he saw Jesus walking on the water. He had to literally step out of the boat and onto the sea to grow in faith.

Think about Paul and Barnabas starting out on their first journey. They had to get up one morning and walk out the door of their home to a place they’d never been before. Their faith grew.

Abraham had to take the first step to Mount Moriah with Isaac. David had to take his sling and step toward Goliath. Daniel had to step into the Lions den.

Think about Ruth. She had to physically leave her home and walk with Naomi into a future she couldn’t see.

Scripture is full of people who discover that faith rarely knows what comes next. It is taking a step because you know Who is leading you.

We’ll look at some of those “first steps” in Scripture—moments when ordinary people had to move their feet before they could see what God was going to do.

We’ll start tomorrow.
