Steps of Faith — Walking With Abraham

Complete Trust In God

When God takes us to the place of complete trust

When Abraham and Isaac made their way up Mount Moriah, neither fully understood the significance of what was about to happen. Abraham was being tested, but God was also revealing something far greater than the outcome of that day’s events.

On Moriah, Abraham and Isaac were given a picture of the cost of redemption. A son was loved. A father was willing to surrender him. A sacrifice was required but God provided a substitute.

There is a striking difference between Moriah and Calvary. On Moriah, Abraham’s hand was stopped, and a ram died in Isaac’s place. At Calvary, God did not spare His own Son. It was us—you and me—who were spared when Jesus Christ became the sacrifice for our sins.

Abraham’s journey up that mountain was an extraordinary step of faith. Hebrews 11:19 tells us that he reasoned God was able to raise Isaac from the dead. He trusted that God’s promise could not fail, even when he couldn’t understand what God was asking.

But notice something else. Abraham told Isaac, “God will provide for Himself the lamb for the burnt offering, my son” (Genesis 22:8).

And He did.

God provided a ram in Isaac’s place. Yet the fullest answer to Isaac’s question would come centuries later, when John the Baptist pointed to Jesus and declared, “Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!” (John 1:29).

What Abraham experienced on Moriah pointed forward to what God would accomplish at Calvary. The ram was a substitute for Isaac; Jesus became the substitute for us. What God provided on that mountain was a glimpse of the redemption He would one day provide through His Son.

We can struggle to understand what God is doing in our lives. We see only the immediate circumstances, while God sees the big picture. Abraham could see a glimpse of Calvary from the mountain. God was already unfolding His plan of redemption.

The real lesson of Moriah isn’t that Abraham was willing to surrender what he loved. It’s that God provided what we could never provide. The Lamb was God’s provision and Jesus is the fulfillment of that promise.
