Steps Of Faith — Walking With Abraham

A Life Measured in Steps

If we’re going to write about taking steps of faith, we can’t overlook Abraham. Billions of people around the world call him the “father of faith”. But what made him a man of faith? Was it that he always knew what to do? That he never questioned God? That he never made a mistake?

Not even close!

Abraham’s story is much more intriguing than that. His life was a journey filled with steps of following God, but we also get glimpses into his humanity. There were moments of extraordinary obedience, times when he trusted God against all odds, and other occasions when fear and impatience got the better of him.

He left his home without knowing where he was going. He believed God’s when it seemed impossible. He rescued his nephew, welcomed strangers into his home and faced unimaginable challenges. But he also ran when he was afraid, acted impetuously out of impatience and made a few wrong decisions that almost ruined everything God had done for him.

That’s what makes his story so valuable. His faith wasn’t a perfect performance. It was a lifetime of learning to trust God. Hebrews 11:8 tells us:

“By faith Abraham, when he was called, obeyed by going out to a place which he was to receive for an inheritance; and he went out, not knowing where he was going.”

I love that last part. He went without knowing where he was going. God gave him a promise without a road map. Abraham had to take the next step without knowing what lay ahead.

That’s what this series is about.

We’re going to walk alongside Abraham and look at the physical steps he took throughout his life. Some were steps of obedience. Some were steps of courage, generosity, and surrender. Some came when he had no idea how things would turn out. We’ll even look at a couple of moments when following God made nonsense at all.

As we follow Abraham’s journey, we’ll learn that faith isn’t about getting every step right. It’s about leaning on the One who has promised to be with us when we step.

You don’t have to see the whole road. You don’t have to understand every turn. And you certainly don’t have to be perfect.

You just have to be willing to take the next step with God.
