Romans 6:23 (Part 2): The Gift of God
Yesterday we stopped in the middle of Romans 6:23. Thankfully, God didn’t.
“…but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
What a contrast! Sin gives us wages—we earn death. God offers a gift—we receive life.
The word “gift” reminds us that salvation can never be earned. We can’t work for it, deserve it or purchase it. Jesus Christ paid the price we could never pay when He died on the cross for our sins and rose again in victory.
Because of Him, our separation from God can be removed. Our guilt can be forgiven. Our broken fellowship with our Creator can be restored. Through Christ we find forgiveness, peace, purpose and the promise of eternal life.
Notice that Romans doesn’t say eternal life is found in religion, good works or trying harder. It is found “in Christ Jesus our Lord.” He alone bridges the gap that sin created.
Romans 6:23 is more than a memory verse. It is the gospel in one sentence. It tells us what sin earns, what God offers and where hope is found. Jesus died on the cross to pay the penalty for our sins. His death paid the price due for our wages. He removes our sins and restored us to God!
He is our pathway to peace and happiness. That is why Romans 6:23 is so important to us. It is the means of salvation for us all and it is a free gift—from God to you.
