So, his prayer teaches us how to seek reconciliation and restoration with God but it goes beyond that.

Now What?

Psalms 51:13

“Then I will teach transgressors Your ways and sinners will be converted to You.”

We’ve spent two weeks talking about David’s quest for restoration and forgiveness. By the end of Psalms 51, he clearly has made amends with his Maker. He offers a sacrifice to Him, but there’s more to it than that.

We don’t walk on this planet alone. None of us are islands. There are people all around us who get hurt by our actions. They are hurting and lost just like David was. David was a good leader but he was not without faults and he had to work through many issues during his reign as king.

The truth is, all of David’s actions impacted the people around him - his generals, his warriors, his palace staff and, of course, Bathsheba and her family. Most of all, though, all the people of his nation were jeopardized because their king was damaged and lost. He had put the whole nation at risk.

A good leader knows what his people need and how to deliver it to them. David abandoned his duty to his people to pursue his own selfish pleasure. He forgot about everyone else and pushed ahead for his own desires and lusts. So, his prayer teaches us how to seek reconciliation and restoration with God but it goes beyond that. Look at these words of David as he tells of his response to the realities of his forgiveness.

Psalms 51:13-15

“I will teach transgressors Your ways.”

“Sinners will be converted to You.”

“My tongue will joyfully sing of Your righteousness.”

“My mouth … declares Your praise.”

Do you see it? An encounter with God should always lead to the proclamation of His goodness. That’s good news! God forgives! He loves! He cares! He saves, delivers, understands, cleans us up and makes us whole again!

The Gospel always produces fruit and it cannot be hidden in us. A clean heart and restored soul MUST praise Him and tell others about Him.

Psalms 66:16

“Come and hear, all who fear God and I will tell of what He has done for my soul.”
