My Jesus, I Love Thee
Have you ever written something that meant a great deal to you but you never showed it to anybody else? How many masterpieces of poetry have been put on paper that our eyes will never see? The private and intimate nature of poetry keeps much it from ever being read or known to anyone other than the author or a close friend or two.
What happens when a great poet dies an early death without ever revealing their work to the world? This is the story of William.
William was a young teenager when he came to know the Lord. Probably not much older than 12 or so, he wrote a poem about his newly acquired love for God. Unfortunately, he died before he reached the age of 27.
His only known poem was not lost to the world, however. After writing his poem, he mailed it to his aunt. She recognized the incredible depth and beauty of William’s work and had the great foresight to have it published.
Some hymns are great because of their music. Others, because the lyrics express an amazing and compelling story of a human being connecting with God in a way that takes us along with the author. Their words allow us to share their deep treasures of peace and love.
That’s why the world loves William’s hymn so much. He takes us down that road with him in a way that we can’t express on our own. William Ralph Featherstone’s hymn was first set to music in 1876 by Adoniram Judson Gordon and it is known to the world today as “My Jesus, I Love Thee.”
Read it, sing it, pray it ... whatever it takes, but find time today to allow this brilliant young boy’s poem to help you express your own love for God.

MY JESUS I LOVE THEE
1 - My Jesus, I love Thee, I know Thou art mine;
For Thee all the follies of sin I resign;
My Gracious Redeemer, my Savior art Thou;
If ever I loved Thee, my Jesus, 'tis now.
2 - I love Thee because Thou hast first loved me
And purchased my pardon on Calvary's tree;
I love Thee for wearing the thorns on Thy brow;
If ever I loved Thee, my Jesus, 'tis now.
3 - I'll love Thee in life, I will love Thee in death,
And praise Thee as long as Thou lendest me breath,
And say when the deathdew lies cold on my brow:
If ever I loved Thee, my Jesus, 'tis now.
4 - In mansions of glory and endless delight,
I'll ever adore Thee in heaven so bright;
I'll sing with the glittering crown on my brow:
If ever I loved Thee, my Jesus, 'tis now.
