Although the 19th century was the golden age of hymn writing, not every great Christmas song was written 200 years ago.
In 1984, Mark Lowry was asked by his pastor to write the lyrics for a Christmas play. Mark thought about Mary and what she must have been thinking as the Christmas story unfolded. He mentioned it to his mom who agreed that if anyone knew the truth about the virgin birth, it would be Mary.
Mark thought about that. What would it be like to sit down and have a cup of coffee with her? What would he ask her? His mind filled with questions. Did she know that her baby would heal people? Did she know that He would walk on water or calm the sea? Mark said, “I just tried to put into words the unfathomable.”
He wrote a song but tried, unsuccessfully, for 7 years to put music to it. Then, in 1991, he was on a bus tour with Buddy Greene. He told his friend about his song and gave him a copy of the lyrics.
Two weeks later, Buddy took a look at the words. Inspiration flooded over him. He wrote a tune in 30 minutes and sang it to Lowry over the phone.
It was an instant hit! “Mary Did You Know?” has become one of the most beloved Christmas songs of our generation and has been recorded by hundreds of artists across multiple genres of music.
The song allows you and I to think about the young girl who bore the Lord Jesus and to imagine what must have gone through her mind as she contemplated these things, as suggested in Luke 2:19: “But Mary treasured all these things, pondering them in her heart.”
