Making A Change

This is the time of year when people look at making some changes in their lives. With every new year we have an opportunity to reflect and take a good look at who we are. Most of us have something in our lives that we would like to fix but changing is not as easy as it sounds. Our bad habits become harder to change with every day that we do them.

So, how can we change when we are so entrenched in our habits? I have watched so many men and women try to change their lives only to fail. Time after time I’ve seen people fall back into their old lifestyles. Why is that?

The problem is that people want their lives to get better but they don’t want to change how they live. They don’t see the link between their destructive lifestyles and the problems that they have.

You see, it works like this: wishing doesn’t do anything. Changing means doing something different. If you keep hanging out with your old drinking buddies, you are going to end up drinking again. If you keep driving through the neighborhood where you used to buy your drugs you will end up desiring to do drugs again.

Don’t visit the websites that lead you into sin. Don’t go to the places where you know you are weak. Stop doing the stuff that tears you down. Replace those destructive behaviors with ones that put God in your life. He is the only way to make any meaningful change.

Pray, read the Bible, go to church, hang out with good people and put God first instead of yourself.

I once heard very good preacher put it this way: To get something you've never had before, you have to do something you've never done before.

In other words, if you want real change, you have to really change. You can’t just wish for it and expect it to happen. Change starts when you stop doing the stuff that got you where you are.

1 John 2:15-16

“Do not love the world nor the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the world.”
